Rodney Dangerfield’s character in the film Back to School said, “… as you go out into the world, my advice to you is… don’t go! It’s rough out there. Move back with your parents. Let them worry about it.” Well, whether it’s good or bad, we all have to “get out there” eventually. Here are a few tips for my fellow YPs who may be just starting out or early on in their careers – just like me!

First, my background. I graduated with a B.S. in Advertising from Ball State University, home of the Cardinals, and the location of this awesome Harlem Shake video. I was an intern here at Pathfinders two summers ago and I was fortunate enough to become an Assistant Account Executive in July of 2013. Throughout my year-long experience as a full-time professional, I’ve been able to pick up some “survival tips” from fellow co-workers and my general experiences as well. I only find it polite to share these with you, my friends.

Take Everything as a Learning Experience

Here at Pathfinders, we call it learning by osmosis. See something, do it, repeat. It’s really that simple. Based on the sheer number of projects we touch on any given day, there are plenty of opportunities for learning something new, or for learning how to approach something better. Whether it stems from a decision, a mistake, or something positive, constantly take a step back and ask, “How it can be done better next time?” That’s how we better ourselves – for our sake – and for the sake of our clients.

    Find a Guide

I know, I know … you’re a 20-something. You don’t need any help. And, you’re invincible. Right? Well, listen up. When it comes to work life, you need to have someone who you can count on, to be your guide/mentor through the good times and the bad. Yes, we’re allowed to make our fair share of mistakes, but having a ‘higher-up’ who will always be there to steer you through and work with you to be the best you can be is something that is extremely important for your long-term success. He/She will be the foundation to build your confidence and a person you can always go to when you’re in a panic.

    Find Balance, and Appreciate It

Come on guys, this is great! We’re young, we’re wild, we’re free! Balancing work life with fun and activities can sometimes be tough, but finding a perfect mix of the two is something that needs to be appreciated. I don’t know about you, but there’s a certain level of satisfaction after putting in a great week at the office and staring a weekend of excitement in the face. Constantly repeating that cycle leads to a well-balanced work life and one that is worth experiencing … sounds like the American dream, right?

Anyway, to sum this spiel up, I’ve learned a ton over the last year; hopefully these few tips can serve as an eye-opener for those of you who are just starting out in this wacky world. Keep the above in mind, and do it with style!
