PF Peeps is our special way of spotlighting individual Pathfinder personalities at work and play, an avenue to discover things about our peeps. We all have unique personalities – and believe ours warrants sharing!
What do you like best about your occupation?
I love working with ideas. For me the writing comes second. Of course, I enjoy being able to express an idea clearly and in a compelling way, but it’s the ideas that get me excited to work.
What are your work methods?
My process almost always begins with finding out as much as I can about the client and their customer(s). Those are crucial for getting into the mind of your audience and knowing what the most important messages are.
I also spend a good amount of time brainstorming, jotting down ideas, testing phrases, etc. I’m looking for a nugget, or “big idea,” that will connect with the target audience in an effective, creative way.
As a writer, I’m always re-writing, editing, and reviewing my own work. As Hemingway said, “The first draft of anything is s***.”
What causes you to grow the most?
Anytime I’ve had to just dive in and figure something out without having all the answers to begin with. And learning from co-workers.
What is special about working in an Advertising and Marketing agency in Mishawaka?
I like to think that we bring a uniquely hard-working and earnest type of work ethic to the table – A commitment to doing great work just because it’s worth doing well. It’s hard to find that quality sometimes but it’s also one of the most admirable. Call it Midwestern values if you want. I think the national brands we work with have a sense of that uniqueness and continue to work with us because of it.
What qualities do you like best in your clients?
An open mind and a collaborative spirit. Clients know their business and their own clients inside and out. We know marketing. The only way to make something great is for both sides to understand and appreciate each other’s work.
Latest novel read?
I recently read To Kill A Mockingbird and loved it (and yes, I never read it in high school).
What is your favorite dance?
Not sure if this move has a name, but to do it, simply throw one hand up in the air and do an exaggerated, high-knee backwards march. It kills on the floor.
What is your favorite type of day?
I’m a copywriter with a philosophy background, so cloudy and/or rainy, obviously.
Go-to lunch spot?
J. W. Chen’s for Chinese. Also, I’ll admit, I actually do love Jimmy John’s.
What is the activity you most enjoy with your Pathfinder team?
Can I say darts? I also love talking new/big ideas.
How would others in the workplace describe you?
Intelligent yet scatter-brained, hard working in spurts, occasionally funny.
You May Not Know…
I’ve been playing piano since I was young, but branched outside of classical music in high school and learned how to play by ear. Since then I’ve played for bands on the weekends, but stick to playing the classical stuff at home.
I’m married to my wonderful wife Katie, and we have two young kids, both amazing in their own ways – Elliott and Olivia.
What is your favorite after work activity?
Every day I go home and my two kids ride on my back and we chase each other around the house. It’s a great after-work routine.
How did you come to this area? Other positions different from present one?
I studied Philosophy in college (I highly recommend it for those who are geared towards it, despite what you might hear about job prospects in this field), and thought I wanted to go into law. I worked at a financial planning firm for about 4 years, then did one year at law school. I left law school because I got a job offer at a financial planning software development company. After two years of doing that I got connected to Pathfinders and became a writer here. Easily one of my best decisions I’ve ever made.
